You Are Welcome Here
You are welcome here. Our community is made up of people who do not fit anywhere else. We are single, married, black, white, Asian, African, Pacific Islander, you name it. Fifty percent of us are sixty five plus and fifty percent of us are younger. Together we are hungry for a church where we are accepted and challenged.
Steel Lake Church is such a place. We welcome you to give us a try for a month of Sundays. Sure, you can attend one service but you have to let us feed you! The food of Christ, and the table fellowship of food and conversation we offer satisfy every spiritual appetite. Today people are looking for a place which provides a choice for worship, study, and fellowship. Look inside the web site for these opportunities. Most of all we welcome you to worship with us and let Jesus Christ touch your heart. We would be honored to meet you!
What's Happening At Steel Lake
Celebration of Loving Day 2016!
Recently seventeen beautiful people gathered in Starkey Friendship Center to celebrate Loving Day, part of a national celebration of Loving v Virginia, the U.S. Supreme Court case brought by Mildred and Richard Loving against the State of Virginia.
The Lovings challenged the state's law against marriage based on race--specifically, the prohibition of marriage between two people of different races--and they won.
The U.S. Supreme Court overturned the 1893 Pace v Alabama decision, unanimously stating that it was unconstitutional, thus ending all race-based legal restrictions on marriage in the United States. The Lovings had been found guilty of Virginia's state statute, the Racial Integrity Act of 1924, which prohibited marriage between "White" people and "Colored" people. The law had been enacted to keep the "White" race pure. Their punishment for marrying each other and living together as husband and wife would have been a sentence of one year in prison.
Several couples at our gathering were unaware of the Supreme Court's 1967 ruling. Loving Day has been celebrated nationally and annually on June 12. There is a movement to make this a national holiday commemorating the Lovings' courageous action. You can find the petition at Lovingday.org.
We had great support from several couples also celebrating being interracial married couples. Brad and Lily Shear were our grill master and registrar, respectively, and their children, Eileen and Julia Sheats, assisted with grilling and registration. Brad's mother, Gladys Johnson, provided delicious food and moral support to the registrars! Steven Dent and Colleen Chinen took our group picture and gathered us for that great moment. Lana and Dennis Danielson provided fantastic potato salad, and Will and Maria Mason hosted the event. Also celebrating and assisting this day were Rose Ratteray, Billie Paddock, Lou Olmstead, Ralph and Shirley Mason, and Sharon Roberts.
This is a family affair and everyone is invited. You needn't be an interracial couple or a person of color to come celebrate! Everyone agreed that we should plan another Loving Day barbecue for next year... so put June 12 on your calendar and save that recipe for potato salad or a favorite dish that represents your family heritage!

Bringing the Whole Church Together
in Ministry, Community, and Worship
June 5 - August 21, 2016

Holly Allen and Christine Ross help us rediscover the whole church who worships and does mission together. Their research shows how difficult and rewarding this model for the church can be for people seeking to solve the growth question for their church. We will learn the principles of their work and put a miniature aspect of their recommendation to work as a group. This will be very exciting for participants and the church as we conduct cutting-edge ideas.
