John 20:21 King James Bible
April 16 is the date of Easter this year. The idea of Jesus sending us is so poignant in 2017. The sale of our building looms on the horizon with a possible close of sale June 12. Everything we do is our last experience in this building.
We bring flowers to the cross outside the doors this year for the last time.
I anticipate we will find a way to keep this wonderful tradition alive at Calvary Lutheran Church, our next temporary site. Many of you will pack up many memories to transplant to our new residence.
I am reminded that Jesus was speaking for the last time to his disciples. They were not relocating their ministry and continuing with his presence. He was leaving them and sending the Holy Spirit in his place. This is a miracle!
Normally movements die when the leader no longer leads the group.
Christ’s presence continued through the work of the Church. The words and actions of frightened disciples ignited a new religion. Certainly they did not know that at the time. God knew.
So much is going on today. Members and friends of our building remember the souls saved and the lives changed. Federal Way has benefited from our witness to Christ here. And we are very sad to leave.
Like the disciples of old, we too must let go of Christ in this place. He goes ahead of us. Our work in God’s name is not finished. Christ reminds us that the future of the Church is dependent upon his presence. Buildings, people, and time benefit from his presence. Yet he moves on still.
What will he do in the next place? Who will he change with the next people? God only knows. What we trust is that two by two, he sends us with our new mission to do the work of God. This Easter we say goodbye to our old building and hello to the risen Lord who sends us out into the world.
With trust in Christ and our Elders,
